Maplewood - Richmond Heights Middle School has been saving seeds for many years to preserve seeds that are perfect for Midwestern climate. These seeds are then grown the following year and their seeds are harvested and saved, continuing the cycle. 8th graders draw packet designs and package the seeds by hand. MRHMS has been saving seeds since 2012 and is partnering with Maplewood Public Library to create a seed library in the lower hallway.
There are many benefits to saving your own seeds: - Increases plant diversity - Saves money - Reduces carbon emissions - Reduces packaging used - Helps develop seeds that are suited towards climate - Makes fresh seeds available - Improves self-reliance
